About the Rotary Club
Rotary joins leaders from all continents, cultures, and occupations to exchange ideas and take action for communities around the world. Rotary members believe that we have a shared responsibility to take action on our world’s most persistent issues. Our dedicated members are the heart of Rotary—people who share the ideals of service, friendship, diversity, integrity, and leadership.
Causes
Rotary focuses on causes that strengthen international relationships, improve lives, and create a more supportive world, furthering our peace initiatives and our campaign to eradicate polio.
Ending Polio
Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.
As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.
Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.
Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.
Promoting peace
Rotary promotes intercultural understanding, trains youth and adult leaders in conflict prevention and mediation, and supports refugees fleeing conflict zones.
Rotary fosters dialogue to promote international understanding among peoples and cultures. We help develop adult and youth leaders to be active in conflict prevention and mediation and to provide support to refugees fleeing danger.
Fighting diseases
We are determined to rid the world of polio and equip communities to stop the transmission of other diseases.
We raise awareness and equip communities to contain the spread of deadly diseases such as polio, HIV/AIDS, and malaria. Our goal is to improve and expand access to low-cost or free health care in developing regions.
Providing clean water
Rotarians don't just dig wells and call it a day. We undertake sustainable projects that bring safe water, sanitation, and hygiene to more people every day.
We support local initiatives that help more people access safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. Our goal is not simply to build wells, but to share our experiences with community leaders and teachers so that our projects are sustainable.
Supporting education
Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support literacy and basic education, reduce the gender gap in education, and increase their adult literacy rates.
Illiteracy affects more than 775 million people over the age of 15. Our goal is to encourage communities to support literacy and basic education programs, reduce the gender gap in education, and increase the adult literacy rate.
Saving mothers and children
We improve access to quality healthcare, sanitation, education, and economic opportunities so that mothers and their children can enjoy better lives.
Every year, around six million children under five die from malnutrition, lack of health care, and unsafe sanitation. By expanding access to better health services, mothers and children can live healthy and strong lives.
Growing local economies
We undertake service projects that promote community economic development and create decent and productive employment opportunities for people of all ages.
Our service projects are designed to foster the comprehensive economic development of communities and create productive and remunerative employment opportunities for people of all ages. We also work with entrepreneurs and local leaders, particularly assisting women in impoverished communities.
Protecting the Environment
We are committed to supporting activities aimed at strengthening the conservation and protection of natural resources, promoting environmental sustainability, and fostering harmony between communities and the environment.
Rotary members approach environmental issues as they always have: proposing projects, using their connections to change policies, and planning for the future.
